OSLO: Norway's government said on Monday it supported opening up a new oil and gas exploration area in the south eastern Barents Sea, which it said would be the first new exploration zone since 1994.

The government said in a statement that it recommended parliament approve its proposal for a zone which it said was expected to hold more than 300 million standard cubic metres of oil equivalents.
