Bulgaria jobless rate edges up to 11pc in October

Published November 16, 2012 Updated November 16, 2012 12:02pm

unemployment SOFIA: Bulgaria's unemployment rate rose to 11 percent in October from 10.6 percent the previous month, mainly due to a drop of seasonal jobs in agriculure and tourism, data from the labour ministry showed on Friday.

About 12, 500 new workers in the European union's poorest country lost their jobs in October, bringing the number of registered unemployed to 361,898 as seasonal job offerings dropped with the end of the holiday and harvest seasons.

Four years after a global economic crisis hit the Balkan country, cutting economic growth and jobs, the jobless rate continues to grow and the number of people without work is about 44,800 hi gher than a year ago.

Bulgaria's centre-right government sees unemployment staying high at around 12.4 percent this year and next, as its small and open economy is struggling to restart.
