agriculture 400ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) has started work on "Promotion of Olive Cultivation for Economic Development and Poverty Alleviation" project with the financial assistance of Italian government.

Under this project olive will be planted on thousands of acres of land in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, FATA and Baluchistan.

In this regard, the Agriculture Researchers and olive growers organized an Olive Plantation Day at Barani Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) Chakwal during which olive plants were distributed among olive growers of the Pothowar Region in order to popularize the olive cultivation in the area.

It is to be mentioned here that the Punjab government has declared the Pothowar area as Olive Valley.

Speaking on the occasion, the scientists highlighted the importance of olive cultivation in the country.

Dr. Muhammad Munir Goraya, Senior Director (Crops) PARC/National Project Director is coordinating and supervising the activities of this project at national level.

PARC believes that this initiative will generate income of the farmers of the area and uplift their livelihood and will improve socio-economic development to help poverty alleviation in the country.
