Tokyo rubber slide

Published Updated

The Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM) rubber contract for September delivery slid on Friday as fears over dwindling demand due to the coronavirus pandemic eclipsed the boost from global stimulus efforts.
The benchmark was down 1.2 yen, or 0.8%, at 150.4 yen per kg as of 0115 GMT, putting it on track for a fifth straight weekly loss.
The most-active rubber contract on the Shanghai futures exchange for September delivery was up 15 yuan at 9,920 yuan ($1,403) per tonne.
The front-month rubber contract on Singapore's SICOM exchange for April delivery settled at 108.8 US cents per kg on Thursday, down 2.2% from the previous session.
The US House of Representatives is expected to pass a $2 trillion stimulus package later on Friday that will flood the world's largest economy with money to stem the damage caused by the pandemic.
Leaders of the Group of 20 major economies pledged on Thursday to inject over $5 trillion into the global economy to limit job and income losses from the coronavirus and "do whatever it takes to overcome the pandemic."
Vehicle sales in US states that implemented lockdown orders to curb the spread of the coronavirus will drop 80% or more, analysts said on Wednesday.
