India formally splits up IoK into two new federally-administered territories

• IoK will now be one territory and Ladakh, which borders China will be a separate territory.
• Both territories will now be ruled by New Delhi.

After nearly three months since it abrogated Article 370 from its constitution, India has formally split up Indian-occupied Kashmir (IoK) into two new federally-administered territories.

Now, IoK is one territory and Ladakh, which borders China is a separate territory and both will now be ruled directly from Delhi.After the state was bifurcated into two Union Territories, the president's rule imposed in IoK has also been revoked.

Today, G.C. Murmu, a former bureaucrat from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat, will be sworn in as the first lieutenant governor IoK. Meanwhile, Radha Krishna Mathur, another former civil servant has already been sworned in office as the lieutenant governor of Ladakh.

On August 5, the Modi-led government revoked Kashmir's special status by repealing Article 370 from its constitution. Before this decision, the Indian government put the region under lockdown which the state is still under.

The Indian government also suspended mobile phone networks, landlines and the internet. Regional political leaders were also placed under house arrest. More than 40,000 Kashmiris have been imprisoned both in Iok and India.
