India is releasing detained Kashmiri politicians only if they sign ‘bonds’

  • Kashmiri politician Mehbooba Mufti's daughter says her mother has refused to sign bonds for her release.
  • Several politicians, including Farooq Abdullah, have been detained by India since August 5.

The Government of India wants Kashmiri politicans, who were detained or arrested in the wake of abrogation of Article 370, to sign a bond as a condition for their release.

Iltija, the daughter of former Chief Minister of IoK Mehbooba Mufti took to the Twitter handle and said that her mother has refused to sign a bond on the condition of her release. Mufti has been detained since India stripped off the special status given to IoK.

Others to be detained include former IoK CM Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and several other politicians. Farooq Abdullah was detained under the Public Safety Act which means detention for up to two years without trial.

"Reports say detainees released today were forced to sign bonds. Under what law is their release conditional as their detention was illegal itself? Many including Ms Mufti have categorically refused to sign these bonds. The government with its rudderless approach is tying itself in knots," Iltija wrote on her mother's official Twitter which she has been handling.

On Thursday, three Kashmiri politicians Yawar Mir, Noor Mohammed and Shoiab Lone, who were under detention since August 5, were released by the administration on various grounds. Mohammed, who is a National Conference worker and was managing party's show in the militancy-infested Batmaloo area of Srinagar, was made to sign a bond to maintain peace and good behaviour, Times of India reported.

The governor administration had earlier released Imran Ansar of the People's Conference and Syed Akhoon on health grounds.
