ROME: Italy should head to snap elections if the current government cannot carry on, Deputy Prime Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini said on Thursday as tensions mounted between the country's warring coalition partners.

"I don't see a different government from this one, if it no longer makes sense for this government to carry on... then there should be elections," Salvini said.

Tensions between Salvini and coalition partner Luigi Di Maio, who heads the 5-Star Movement, have been rising in recent days with both leaders warning on Thursday the government could collapse following mutual recriminations over the election of the next European Commission president.
