ICE cotton futures edge lower on fund selling

Published Updated

ICE cotton futures dipped in low volume trade on Monday, hit by fund selling while the focus remained on the trade talks between the United States and China.

* The most active cotton contract on ICE Futures US, the May contract

, settled down 0.29 of a cent, or 0.4 percent, at 73.20 cents per lb.

* "Today, after oscillating throughout the session, there was some fund selling at the end of the day, which resulted in cotton closing a little lower," said Gabriel Crivorot, analyst at Societe Generale in New York.

* The contract traded within a range of 73.05 cents to 73.85 cents per lb.

* "The market is just hesitant to make any movement here ahead of some concrete action on trade negotiations between the US and China," said Jobe Moss, a broker with MCM Inc in Lubbock, Texas.

* "There is no interest to push the market ... I didn't see anything spectacular today. It was really quiet," said Moss.

* A senior Chinese official said on Saturday that China and the United States were still working day and night to achieve a trade deal.

* Total futures market volume fell by 5,204 to 20,529 lots. Data showed total open interest fell 886 to 219,837 contracts in the previous session.

* Certificated cotton stocks deliverable as of March 8 totaled 123,219 480-lb bales, down from 128,668 in the previous session.
