Soybeans, corn flat to up 1 cent; wheat flat to down 1 cent

Published Updated

CHICAGO: Following are US trade expectations for the opening of grain and soy complex trading at the Chicago Board of Trade at 8:30 a.m. CST (1430 GMT) on Tuesday.

Moves in US grain and soybean trading were relatively thin for second straight overnight session as investors evened positions ahead of US Department of Agriculture key crop data due on Friday, including quarterly stocks reports that were delayed last month by partial government shutdown.

WHEAT - Flat to down 1 cent per bushel

Wheat prices steadied after hitting 1-1/2 week peak on Monday, boosted by firmer global cash wheat prices that made American supplies more competitive in export markets.

Total wheat stocks in Canada were down slightly in December from a year earlier, according to a Statistics Canada farmer survey.

Jordan's state grain buyer purchased 60,000 tonnes of optional-origin wheat in a tender seeking 120,000 tonnes.

CBOT March wheat traded down 1/4 cent at $5.25-1/2 per bushel. K.C. March hard red winter wheat was 1/4 cent higher at $5.10-3/4 a bushel and MGEX March spring wheat was down 1 cent at $5.73-3/4.

CORN - Flat to up 1 cent

Corn held within the tight range that has defined the trade for more than a week, largely following technical cues and soybean and wheat markets.

CBOT March corn was last up 1/4 cent at $3.79-1/2 per bushel.

SOYBEANS - Flat to up 1 cent per bushel

Soybeans stayed in trading range established in Monday's session but could extend slight gains after the US Department of Agriculture confirmed large American soy sales to China.

USDA in its daily export reporting system announced sales of 2.6 million tonnes of US soybeans to China and 274,000 tonnes sold to unknown destinations.

The sales followed a pledge last week by China to purchase 5 million tonnes of US soy in a good-will gesture during US-China talks to end the trade war between the countries.

Statistics Canada said canola stocks reached a record of 14.6 million tonnes in December.
