ECP appoints Khalid Maqbool Siddique as MQM-P convener

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) appointed on Monday Muttahida Qaumi Movement - Pakistan's (MQM-P) Bahadurabad

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) appointed on Monday Muttahida Qaumi Movement - Pakistan's (MQM-P) Bahadurabad faction Chief Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui as the party's convener, removing Farooq Sattar from the position.

According to local media reports, the ECP rejected MQM-P PIB faction leader Sattar's petition, which challenged the commission's decision in removing him as party convener. Judge Aamer Farooq declared Siddiqui as the party convener.

The ECP initially removed Sattar as the party convener after the Rabita Committee filed a petition challenging the intra-party elections that were held, in which Sattar was elected as party convener. Sattar had won over 9,000 votes in the intra-party elections.

On March 29, the Islamabad High Court suspended ECP's decision of removing Sattar as the party convener. The high court reinstated Sattar as the MQM-P convener.

The MQM-P had been split into two after a rift between Sattar and Rabita Committee member Amir Khan over Senate elections. The Bahadurabad faction had removed Sattar from the post of convener.

Several attempts had been made to reunite the two factions, but the rift had widened further with both factions taking the issue to ECP. However, for the general elections slated for July 25, the two factions have come together in their fight to win elections.
