ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Friday expressed concern about the health of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, demanding his immediate medical examination and treatment at an independent hospital under the supervision of his personal doctors.
Talking to reporters outside Parliament House, Gohar said reports about Khan’s deteriorating health had caused widespread concern and stressed that access to medical treatment should not be made a matter of political expediency.
“The reports concerning Khan’s health are not encouraging, and the entire nation is worried,” he said.
The PTI chairman said Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, had met the former prime minister earlier this week and discussed his health and pending legal cases.
However, he expressed dismay over restrictions on meetings between Khan and his family members, lawyers and party leaders, despite directions issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
“If the top court’s orders regarding meetings with his family and his transfer to a private hospital can be disregarded, what else can be said,” he asked.
He urged the Supreme Court to ensure implementation of its directions, particularly those concerning Khan’s access to family members and provision of proper medical care.
Gohar’s remarks came amid growing anxiety within Khan’s family and party following Safdar’s meeting with the jailed former prime minister, who is also the PTI’s founding chairman.
Although Safdar did not publicly disclose details about Khan’s health after the meeting, subsequent statements by his sister, Rubina Khan, and son, Kasim Khan, have fuelled concerns about his medical condition and access to healthcare.
According to party sources, Safdar was allowed to meet Khan after signing an undertaking with jail authorities that the meeting would be confined to discussions about legal matters relating to Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, and would not involve political issues.
In a statement, his son Kasim Khan said his father’s blood pressure had surged to 192, raising fresh concerns about his health and the medical care available to him in prison.
The family has called for Khan’s immediate transfer to an independent medical facility, with his personal physician present to oversee his treatment.
