Near Karachi ports: Goods transporters call for permanent parking facilities
KARACHI: The Transporters of Goods Association (TGA) has called for the establishment of permanent parking zones for trucks and containers near Karachi Port and Port Qasim.
Lack of designated facilities is disrupting traffic flow, causing operational difficulties for transporters and creating problems for commuters and other institutions, they pointed out in a statement on Monday.
TGA President Tariq Gujjar said the absence of adequate and organised parking facilities around the city’s major ports had forced transporters to park heavy vehicles along roads, aggravating traffic congestion.
The situation was also causing inconvenience to the Pakistan Navy, Karachi, the issue required urgent attention from the relevant authorities.
Gujjar said goods transportation was vital to the national economy and commercial activity, which warranted facilitation. However, lack of designated parking areas caused unnecessary delays, additional operating costs and disruption to the smooth flow of traffic.
TGA General Secretary Javed Khan urged the relevant authorities to allocate suitable land near the ports and set up a permanent parking project.
He said transporters should be provided with proper, legally designated parking facilities instead of being left with no option but to park their vehicles on public roads.
He emphasised that the issue extended beyond the transport sector, directly affecting Karachi’s overall traffic management and the daily lives of its residents.
The association called for a coordinated strategy involving all relevant government departments and port authorities to establish dedicated truck and container parking zones near Karachi Port, Port Qasim and other major commercial areas.
It said the proposed facilities would provide relief to transporters, reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and facilitate the smooth movement of goods and commercial vehicles across the city.
