ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that Pakistan has demonstrated responsibility in the context of its efforts to ease tensions between Iran and the United States — whereas Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appreciated Pakistan’s role in this regard.

These views were shared in a meeting between the chairman Senate and Maldives president on Thursday.

The meeting aimed at discussing “ways to strengthen longstanding bilateral ties, enhance trade and economic cooperation, and promote parliamentary diplomacy.”

An official statement issued after the meeting said that Chairman Gilani, discussing regional and global developments, said that Pakistan remained committed to peace and stability.

He highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to ease tensions between Iran and the United States, stating that the country has demonstrated responsibility in promoting regional and international peace, the statement added.

It further said that Maldivian president appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to “reduce international tensions and promote peace.”

The chairman Senate said Pakistan and Maldives enjoy close, friendly relations based on mutual trust, respect and shared interests.

He noted that the ongoing year 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, “providing an important opportunity to further deepen cooperation.”

Maldivian president reaffirmed Maldives “strong commitment to its friendly relations with Pakistan and expressed interest in further expanding parliamentary, diplomatic and economic cooperation,” the statement said.

Earlier on Tuesday, President Muizzu landed in Pakistan on an official visit, in what came as the first formal visit of a Maldivian head of state in 11 years.

The visit took place at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, said an official statement issued earlier.

Maldives president was accompanied by the First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, and a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers and senior officials, the statement added.

During the visit, President Muizzu met President Asif Zardari, PM Sharif and senior defence officials.

He held “restricted and delegation-level talks” with PM Sharif, the statement added.
