KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Home and Law Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar chaired a meeting with delegations of transporters’ associations to review their concerns and discuss measures for resolving issues relating to driving licenses, third-party motor vehicle insurance, traffic management and law and order.
The transporters’ representatives briefed the minister on difficulties being faced by commercial and goods transport operators, particularly regarding the issuance of LTV and HTV driving licences, third-party insurance and security concerns in SITE, North Karachi and other areas.
The home minister directed the concerned authorities to facilitate eligible drivers and ensure that LTV and HTV licences are issued after completion of the prescribed tests and legal formalities.
The DIG Driving Licence informed the meeting that licences would be issued to eligible applicants upon successful completion of the required tests and prescribed formalities.
The issue of third-party motor vehicle insurance was also discussed in detail. The Secretary Excise briefed the meeting on the existing mechanism and measures for addressing the concerns raised by the transporters.
It was stated that insurance-related matters concerning public and commercial transport would be dealt with in accordance with government policy and applicable laws.
Lanjar directed the Secretary Excise, Secretary Law, DIG Driving Licence and DIG Traffic to coordinate and work out practical solutions to issues concerning driving licences and motor vehicle insurance.
The meeting was also briefed on matters relating to land for truck stands and transport terminals.
The Secretary Transport apprised the participants of progress made towards resolving the matter and informed the meeting that a summary had been submitted to the competent authority. The transporters’ representatives highlighted security concerns faced by their members in SITE, North Karachi and other parts of the city.
Taking notice of the matter, the Home Minister directed the Additional IG Karachi to ensure appropriate security arrangements for transporters in the concerned districts and areas.
Issues relating to traffic management were also discussed, and necessary directions were issued to the DIG Traffic to facilitate transporters while ensuring compliance with traffic laws and regulations.
Lanjar assured the delegations that the legitimate issues of the transport community would be addressed on a priority basis and directed all concerned departments to maintain close coordination for their timely resolution.
Representing the transport community were Nisar Hussain Jafri, Chairman, All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance; Malik Shahzad Awan, Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance; Malak Shabar, Sindh Goods; Yaseen Niazi, United Goods Transport Alliance; and Ubaid Gul, General Secretary, Karachi Goods Carrier Association, besides other representatives of the transport sector.
