KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Labour, Human Resources and Social Protection Saeed Ghani has assured representatives of the Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP) and various industrial associations that their genuine concerns will be addressed on a priority basis to strengthen industry and boost exports.
Ghani gave the assurance at a meeting with EFP office-bearers and representatives of industrial associations on Monday.
Sindh Labour Secretary Sajid Jamal Abro, Workers Welfare Board Secretary Saeed Saleh Jumani, SESSI Commissioner Hadi Bakhsh Kalhoro and Director General Labour Nazir Ahmed Soomro also attended.
The industrial representatives briefed the minister on challenges facing the sector amid the prevailing economic situation and stressed the need for practical measures to strengthen Karachi’s industries and enhance their competitiveness in international markets.
They raised issues concerning the minimum wage, SESSI contributions, industrial inspections and other matters affecting businesses. ?Ghani said the Sindh government was committed to promoting industrial development and resolving the problems faced by industrialists, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises.
He said that whenever he had been given the Labour Department portfolio, he had sought to strengthen coordination among workers, employers and the government. Sindh, he added, was the first province to establish tripartite committees and delegate relevant powers to them.
Referring to the proposed Sindh Labour Code, Ghani said consultations with stakeholders had been continuing for the past year to build greater harmony between employers and workers, facilitate industrial growth and improve workers’ living standards.
He said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and the party leadership had made it clear that all possible facilities should be provided to industrialists to support Pakistan’s economic development.
Saeed Ghani directed the Labour Secretary, Workers Welfare Board Secretary, SESSI Commissioner and Director General Labour to coordinate with industrialists and other stakeholders, and ensure the early resolution of the issues raised at the meeting.
The EFP delegation included its President Majyd Aziz, Syed Nazar Ali, Humayun Nazir, Mehnaz Kalodi, Muhammad Yousuf and Sadaf Latif. Representatives of North Karachi Association, Korangi Association of Trade and Industry, SITE Industrial Area and Federal B Area Association also attended.
