LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday sought arguments on the maintainability of a petition of Shahraiz Khan challenging the detention of his mother Aleema Khan and his two aunts under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance.
Aleema was detained on Sunday after the Lahore Deputy Commissioner (DC) issued 30 days detention order. Following Aleema’s detention, her two sisters Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi were also detained under the MPO. According to the order, they were involved in roadblocks and protests on May 09, 2023.
The petitioner’s counsel contended that the DC unlawfully issued the detention orders and failed to follow the procedure prescribed under Section 3 of the MPO Ordinance. He also argued that the orders contained no specific allegations and demonstrated no application of mind. The counsel on a court’s query alleged that the detention proceedings appeared to have been initiated after Aleema had already been taken into custody.
The court observed that it would examine the issue and asked the counsel to submit his arguments on next hearing on September 25.
Hammad Azhar’s case
The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday sought a reply from police by September 28 on a petition of Ishrat Azhar, mother of former federal minister Hammad Azhar, seeking permission for meeting with her son.
The petitioner asked the court to allow the Hammad Azhar’s family members and legal counsel to meet him. Hamad Azhar had reportedly remained in hiding for nearly three years and was wanted by police in several cases registered in Lahore and other cities. Hammad was arrested in Multan a few days ago and was handed over to the Lahore Police.
The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore had handed over Hammad Azhar to police on a 20-day physical remand in connection with a case of attack on Corps Commander House.
