ISLAMABAD: A survey conducted by a cybersecurity company revealed that younger family members and friends are playing a critical role in helping elderly people navigate the digital world, from installing apps to managing online banking and privacy settings.

The results of the survey have been released in Pakistan by a leading cybersecurity company here on Saturday.

Kaspersky’s new survey, which was conducted in the Middle East, Turkiye and Africa (META) region, disclosed that 88 percent of the respondents had had experience assisting elderly relatives or friends with information technology on their devices.

Around 50 percent of respondents said that they provide support regularly, while another 38 percent help occasionally upon request.

Installing applications emerged as the most common type of assistance, with 52 percent of respondents reporting that they help older people download and set up apps. Support with social media accounts follows closely behind at 50 percent, reflecting the increasing importance of digital communication tools for seniors.

The survey also shows that many older users require help with more sensitive digital activities. Around 43 percent of respondents assist elderly relatives with online transactions and banking software, while 41 percent help configure privacy settings and 40 percent support the use of e-government services.

Despite growing cybersecurity concerns targeting older internet users, only 27 percent of respondents said they help elderly relatives install security software.

This may indicate that cybersecurity protection is either underestimated, perceived as too complex, or not considered a priority during device setup, the survey added.
