KARACHI: Governor Sindh Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi has said democracy is fundamentally about respecting the people’s will, protecting basic rights and ensuring equal opportunities for every citizen.
He stressed that strong democratic institutions are essential for sustainable economic development, social justice and national stability.
In a special message on World Democracy Day, the Governor said the strength of a democratic society depended not merely on electoral processes but on meaningful public participation, institutional accountability and the confidence of citizens in the democratic system.
He emphasised that respect for the Constitution, the rule of law and state institutions was indispensable to strengthening democracy and ensuring political and social stability.
“Democracy derives its real strength from public participation and the trust of the people,” Hashmi said, adding that every citizen had the right to express an opinion and participate fully in matters of national importance.
The Governor stressed that differences of opinion were an integral part of a democratic society and should be respected rather than suppressed.
He called for dialogue and constitutional means to resolve political and social disputes, describing consensus-building and tolerance as central to the democratic spirit.
Hashmi said a strong, functioning democracy could provide the foundation for economic progress, social justice, and long-term national stability. He maintained that democratic institutions must remain responsive to people’s aspirations and needs.
He said Pakistan’s development and prosperity required a collective commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding constitutional supremacy and safeguarding the fundamental rights of citizens.
The Governor underscored that these principles were not the responsibility of the government or political institutions alone, but a shared national obligation requiring participation from all segments of society.
He said a democratic Pakistan, founded on constitutional values, equal citizenship and respect for differing views, could better address the country’s challenges and create greater opportunities for its people.
