KARACHI: Sindh Assembly’s Standing Committee on Home Affairs on Thursday reviewed action against drugs across the province, particularly around educational institutions.
The committee, chaired by PPP legislator, Faryal Talpur, was briefed on the progress of an area-wise plan and action taken against the sale of drugs near schools and colleges, according to a spokesperson for the Sindh home minister.
Talpur said better coordination was needed to make the campaign more effective.
She said the sale and use of drugs around educational institutions would not be tolerated.
Protecting the young generation from the menace of drugs is the government’s and relevant institutions’ top priority, she said.
She called for stronger action against synthetic drugs, cocaine and online drug delivery networks.
She also directed authorities to tighten checks at entry and exit points in border areas and regularly review the area-wise action plans.
Talpur praised the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and Sindh Police and asked how many drug cases had been registered, how many suspects arrested and what proportion of cases had resulted in convictions.
Sindh Home Minister, Zia Ul Hassan Lanjar, told the committee that the government was stepping up its campaign against drugs, particularly around educational institutions, under a zero-tolerance policy. He said synthetic drugs and online drug networks required joint action by the relevant agencies. He also directed them to keep the committee informed about progress.
The minister said a mechanism had been prepared to set up new courts under the new drug law to speed up trials and help bring cases to a conclusion.
He also called for better coordination among police, the ANF and Excise and Narcotics Department, particularly in Karachi and other divisions of the province.
Task force chief, DIG Irfan Baloch, told the committee that Sindh Police had, for the first time, destroyed 105 kilograms of hashish and more than six tonnes of gutka mawa by burning them. He said 40 kilograms of ice had also been seized.
In 57 operations, 132 suspects had been arrested, including 78 in operations around educational institutions.
Of these, 41 were serving sentences in prisons.
Later, ANF’s Brigadier Umar gave the committee a detailed briefing. ANF officials said their teams, working with Sindh Police on the home minister’s instructions, were continuing operations across the province.
