KARACHI: Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf has reaffirmed the Pakistan Navy’s commitment to strengthening its operational capabilities and defending the country’s maritime frontiers, saying the force’s legacy of courage, sacrifice and professionalism continues to guide its future course.

In a message issued on the occasion of Navy Day, the Naval Chief said Pakistan Navy had faced limited resources and constrained operational capabilities since the country’s inception, but developed a strong culture of sacrifice, professionalism and valour while working to enhance its operational strength.

Admiral Naveed Ashraf said the Navy’s resolve was demonstrated on September 8, 1965, when it carried out Operation SOMNATH, targeting coastal radar installations at Dwarka.

He described the operation as a demonstration of Pakistan Navy’s offensive capability, strategic foresight and determination, saying it showed that a maritime force could achieve decisive effects despite numerical and material constraints.

The Naval Chief said the legacy established during Operation SOMNATH remained reflected in Pakistan Navy’s deterrence against the Indian Navy during what he referred to as Marka-e-Haq.

He also highlighted the role of Pakistan Navy’s submarine force in developing the country’s undersea deterrence, particularly recalling the exploits of submarine GHAZI.

According to the message, the Navy’s submarine capability has subsequently entered a new phase with the induction of HANGOR Class submarines, which the Naval Chief described as representing a significant advancement in technological sophistication, combat capability and maritime deterrence.

Admiral Naveed Ashraf said the Navy was continuing to adopt modern platforms and evolving operational concepts while retaining the spirit of sacrifice demonstrated by its predecessors.

He paid tribute to the Shuhada and Ghazis of Pakistan Navy, saying their sacrifices had contributed to the sovereignty and security of Pakistan’s maritime frontiers.

The Naval Chief said the legacy from GHAZI to HANGOR conveyed a continued commitment to the defence of Pakistan and would remain a source of inspiration for future generations.
