KARACHI: Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi visited the Community Policing Karachi (CPK) Centre at Defence Police Station on Monday and reviewed its advanced surveillance and security system, where he described the effective use of technology and citizen-police cooperation as key to making Karachi safer.
CPK Chief Murad Sohni and other officials briefed the Governor on the centre’s integrated monitoring system, advanced cameras and coordination mechanism with police.
Hashmi also inspected various surveillance technologies being used to monitor the city and strengthen law-enforcement efforts.
The Governor said modern technology could significantly enhance crime prevention, improve police response, and strengthen citizens’ security.
He termed CPK’s surveillance network an encouraging initiative towards making policing more effective, responsive and technology-driven.
“Karachi’s security can be further improved through meaningful cooperation between citizens and law-enforcement agencies,” Hashmi said and appreciated CPK’s efforts to build a stronger partnership between the community and police.
Sohni said more than 2,000 modern security cameras had been installed at strategic locations across Karachi. He said the CPK Centre was also using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology for real-time vehicle monitoring.
The system, he said, could detect the registration number of a stolen vehicle within seconds, while relevant vehicle information could be retrieved in about 20 seconds and immediately shared with police.
He said CPK’s surveillance network was directly linked with police, enabling faster coordination and response. Pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras installed under the system offered 360-degree coverage and a surveillance range of around 1.5 kilometres.
Sohni also briefed the Governor on CPK’s environmental and civic initiatives. Around 80,000 saplings had been planted along the Lyari Expressway under the organisation’s Green Initiative.
He said CPK’s broader vision was to contribute towards a clean, green and safe Karachi. Memorandums of understanding had been signed with the Sindh government, police, local government institutions and private organisations for joint initiatives in security, cleanliness, plantation and civic services.
The Governor appreciated the initiatives and stressed continued collaboration among citizens, police, government institutions and the private sector to improve security and the overall quality of life in Karachi.
