ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Malaysia have agreed to enhance bilateral relations and intelligence sharing to counter terrorism and drug trafficking.

The Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs Saifuddin Nasution Ismail reached this understanding during a meeting held here on Saturday. The two ministers agreed that a high-level Pakistani delegation would soon visit Malaysia to further advance bilateral ties.

The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation in counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, prevention of illegal immigration, and cybercrime. Cooperation in the areas of coast guards and training programmes was also discussed. The two sides also agreed to develop a more effective joint strategy against terrorism, narcotics trafficking, and human trafficking.

The two sides reached an agreement to enhance cooperation between the National Police Academy of Pakistan and the Royal Malaysia Police College. The two sides also discussed promoting tourism between Pakistan and Malaysia and facilitating visa procedures.

Naqvi said that Pakistan also wanted to benefit from Malaysia’s experience in the Coast Guard sector. He expressed hope that the Malaysian Interior Minister’s visit would prove to be an important milestone in taking relations between the two countries to the next level.

He said Malaysia was one of the fastest-developing Muslim countries and an excellent tourism destination for Pakistanis. He also emphasized that an increase in the work quota for Pakistanis would enable more Pakistani citizens to travel to Malaysia through legal channels.

The meeting was attended by State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Secretary Interior, Director General (DG) of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Inspector General (IG) of the Federal Constabulary (FC), the National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Authority, and other senior officials.
