KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that the Pakistan Peoples Party is committed to constitutional procedures on the question of new provinces.

“Any new province should be created through the relevant constitutional process and approval by the provincial assembly concerned,” he said.

The minister criticised the MQM’s record in Karachi, alleging that the party had made recruitments in government offices on political grounds, and it made encroachments on public land.

He said the period of violence and strikes had damaged the city’s economy.

He said that the operations conducted by police and Rangers had significantly improved the law and order situation in the city.

On the health condition of former prime minister Imran Khan, Memon said every sick person had had a right to medical treatment on humanitarian grounds, and that political differences should not obstruct access to healthcare.

“The court decisions allowing medical treatment or family meetings should be implemented,” said the senior minister.

Memon said constitutional and legal procedures must be respected in all matters, stressing that development, governance and political disputes should be addressed within the framework of the law.

The senior minister also highlighted government initiatives in housing, energy, education and public-private partnerships.

The administration was focused on implementing projects rather than merely announcing them.

He said Thar Coal was now contributing more than 3,500 megawatts to Pakistan’s electricity generation and described the project as a potential foundation for broader economic growth and energy security.

He credited President Asif Ali Zardari and former and incumbent chief ministers, Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Syed Murad Ali Shah, with advancing the Thar Coal initiative.

Meanwhile, SharjeelInamMemon on Saturday reviewed construction on Karachi’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)Red Line project and said that work had been progressing rapidly, and the University Road would become fully functional by mid-September.

During a visit to the site of the project, SharjeelMemon — who has portfolios of Information, Transport and Mass Transit—received a briefing on construction activities at different sites.

The Secretary of Transport,AsadZamin, TransKarachi CEO ZubairChanna, consultants and engineers accompanied him.

Memon said carpeting had been completed at several sections of the University Road, while work was continuing to restore the entire route to traffic.

Bridges and other infrastructure were also being constructed under the Red Line project.

He said the Sindh government was also advancing the Yellow Line BRT project and working to expand public transport options in Karachi.

The government was considering purchasing double-decker buses, while agreements had been signed and orders placed for 500 electric buses, he said.

“Providing modern transport facilities to the people of Karachi is the priority of the Sindh government,” he said.
