PKR: marginal gain

KARACHI: The Pakistani rupee continued its marginal gain against the US dollar for another week, appreciating 0.02 percent in the inter-bank market.

The local unit closed at 277.65 against the greenback, a gain of Re0.06 from 277.71 it had closed at a week earlier.

The inflow of overseas workers’ remittances into Pakistan stood at USD 3.631 billion in July 2026, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) data showed.

In terms of growth, remittances increased by 4.5 percent on a month-on-month basis and 13 percent on a year-on-year basis

Pakistan’s fiscal deficit narrowed to 2.6 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in the fiscal year 2025-26, its lowest level in more than two decades, said Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad.

The deficit, which stood at 7.9 percent of GDP in FY22, declined for three consecutive years, while the government recorded a primary surplus, before interest payments, of 2.9 percent of GDP in FY26, Schehzad said in a post on X.

Foreign exchange reserves held by SBP increased by USD 14 million during the week ended August 7, 2026, reaching USD 17.057 billion. The reserves held by commercial banks stood at USD 5.441 billion, taking the country’s total liquid foreign reserves to USD 22.498 billion.

Open-market rates

In the open market, the PKR gained 12 paise for buying and 25 paise for selling against USD, closing at 278.59 and 279.62, respectively.

Against Euro, the PKR lost 18 paise for buying and 10 paise for selling, closing at 320.28 and 323.42, respectively.

Against UAE Dirham, the PKR remained unchanged for buying and gained 2 paise for selling, closing at 75.80 and 76.45, respectively.

Against Saudi Riyal, the PKR lost 1 paisa for buying and 2 paise for selling, closing at 74.12 and 74.70, respectively.
