KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Culture and Tourism Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah on Thursday flagged off a special Freedom Train from Karachi Cantt Railway Station for Thar to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day.
Deputy Divisional Superintendent Operations Hamid Farooq Qureshi and other Pakistan Railways officials were present at the departure ceremony.
The train, which is being operated as a Freedom Train under the Desert Safari Train initiative, is scheduled to reach Thar late Thursday. The passengers will participate in Independence Day celebrations at Zero Point and other locations in Thar on August 14 before returning to Karachi on Friday evening.
Speaking on the occasion, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah said the train would showcase the diverse cultural heritage and traditions of Sindh and reflect the spirit of patriotism associated with Independence Day.
He said the Pakistani nation had reasons to hold its head high and paid tribute to Field Marshal General Asim Munir, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The minister said Pakistan had entered into important agreements with Türkiye and Saudi Arabia and was increasingly playing its role in promoting peace in the region and beyond.
He said a number of overseas visitors had come to Karachi for holidays, with foreign tourists also travelling on the Desert Safari Train.
Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah highlighted the potential of religious tourism in Sindh, saying the province had several important religious and heritage sites that needed to be promoted internationally.
