Indonesian ferry from Bali catches fire in waters off Lombok, evacuations underway

JAKARTA: A ferry with around 130 people on board travelling from the Indonesian tourist island of Bali caught fire in waters off Lombok on Wednesday morning and the evacuation of the passengers is underway, officials said.

The KM Putri Yasmin ferry left Padangbai port in Bali for Lembar port in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara province, I Gusti Lanang Wiswananda, the head of Bali’s rescue agency, told Reuters.

The head of West Nusa Tenggara rescue agency Muhammad Hariyadi told local broadcaster Kompas TV the incident started in the Lombok Strait at 4:39 a.m. on Wednesday (2039 GMT Tuesday).

Hariyadi said more than 200 personnel have been deployed to evacuate all passengers.

Five dead, 41 missing after Indonesian ferry catches fire, authorities say

The ferry was carrying 114 passengers and 17 crew, based on the manifest, Heri Wiyanto, an official at Padangbai port on Bali, told Kompas TV.

Heri said authorities had evacuated 33 passengers so far, while Kompas TV reported all passengers are safe. It was unclear how the ferry caught fire.
