HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders & Small Industry President Muhammad Saleem Memon has expressed serious reservations over the situation of HESCO’s power system after the recent rain and strong winds, saying that the paralysis of the vast power system due to minor weather conditions is a serious question mark.
Saleem Memon stated that HESCO is the institution responsible for power distribution in a large geographical area, where electricity is provided to millions of consumers through hundreds of 11KV feeders. According to the available information, reports of 157 feeders tripping out of 166 feeders of HESCO in Hyderabad have surfaced.
The recent situation has once again made it clear that the power distribution system needs further modernization, timely repairs and improvement in its ability to deal with emergencies. He said that if power is not restored in several areas for several days after a few hours of rain or wind, it is not just a weather problem but also raises questions about the planning, infrastructure and management performance of the system. Consumers, traders and industrialists pay electricity bills regularly, so it is their fundamental right to quality, consistent and reliable power supply.
The HCSTSI president said that the current system of HESCO needs to be replaced according to modern requirements. The old electricity poles, wires, transformers and distribution system should be upgraded in a phased manner so that power supply is not affected much during rain, wind and other natural conditions. Modern fault detection system, smart metering, GIS based monitoring and instant complaint redressal system should be implemented on priority basis.
Saleem Memon demanded that the administrative structure of HESCO be reviewed and consideration should be given to dividing the power distribution system into more effective and accountable units at the district level, so that local problems can be resolved immediately at the local level and better service can be provided to the consumers.
He said that real competition in the power sector is the need of the hour. Consumers should be given the option to get power from power supply companies according to their needs and standards, while power distribution companies should also be given the freedom to buy power, benefit from renewable energy projects and adopt low-cost power sources.
He demanded of the federal and provincial governments to bring about fundamental reforms in all power distribution companies including HESCO.
