KARACHI: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has put its emergency response teams on high alert to ensure uninterrupted water supply and sewerage services during Chehlum processions and religious gatherings in the city.

KWSC Spokesman said the measures were taken on the instructions of Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, who directed operational staff to remain on standby to respond promptly to any disruption in water supply or sewerage services during the observance.

The utility said superintending engineers, executive engineers and field teams had been instructed to coordinate closely with the district administration, police, elected representatives and organisers of Chehlum processions to facilitate arrangements.

As part of the contingency plan, KWSC will ensure water supply to mosques, imambargahs, religious gatherings, sabeels and procession routes. Sewerage lines along the routes are being cleaned, while damaged manholes are being repaired and covers installed to minimise public inconvenience.

The corporation said jetting and suction machines had been deployed, additional field staff assigned to sensitive locations and emergency response teams placed on standby. Its Hydrants Cell has also been directed to provide water tankers where needed during religious events.

Chief Engineers Aftab Alam Chandio, Muhammad Zahid, Shafqat Maghan and Shehbaz Bashir have been appointed to supervise the operation and monitor arrangements throughout the Chehlum observance.

All relevant officers would remain in the field to ensure civic services continue without disruption during the processions.
