ISLAMABAD: Pakistan condemned the use of pellet guns in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), as well as in India itself.
Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said this on Saturday while responding to queries. “The use of pellet gun is abhorring wherever it takes place – whether it takes place in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir or in India. We totally condemn that.”
He added: “The use of pellet guns in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir in a certain time frame, particularly 2016-18, and probably in some way continues till today, was amply highlighted and duly condemned.”
You may recall a very good report by the Amnesty International on the massive blindness that pellet guns caused. This is part of the history now, he observed.
Andrabi remarked: “It was documented in the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reports – the two reports that came out in 2018 and 2019. Civil society had also actively monitored.” To some extent, FO spokesperson said the victims, their rehabilitation and their treatment were also documented.
“I recall the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, which is a UN Human Rights Convention, had also taken note of it that how far the use of this weapon (pellet gun) as a lethal weapon for crowd control basically can be justified. India justified the use of pellet gun as a crowd control. So, these developments are well documented, he emphasised.
