KARACHI: The first major monsoon spell is expected to hit Karachi with heavy downpours from July 31, while widespread rain is also forecast across several districts of Sindh through August 2, the Met Office said on Wednesday, advising authorities and the public to take precautionary measures.

The Met said a deep depression over Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh in India is pulling strong monsoon currents from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into Pakistan. These currents are expected to enter the upper and central parts of the country from Wednesday.

A westerly wave is also affecting northern areas and is likely to strengthen, extending its influence over most upper and central parts of the country. Under the combined effect of these weather systems, dust-thundershowers and rain with moderate to isolated heavy falls are expected from the evening or night of July 31 until August 2, with occasional gaps.

Tharparker, Umerkot, Mirpur Khas, Badin, Sanghar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Hyderabad, Matiari, Jamshoro, Shaheed Benazirabad, Ghotki, Kashmore, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Sukkur, Qambar Shahdadkot, Larkana, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Thatta and Karachi Division are likely to see the monsoonal rain.

The Met warned that heavy rainfall may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Mithi, Mirpur Khas, Umerkot, Tando Muhammad Khan and Tando Allahyar during the forecast period.

It added that strong winds and lightning could damage weak structures, including solar panels, electricity poles, billboards and other vulnerable installations. Farmers have been advised to plan crop activities according to the weather and take proper care of their livestock.

The department urged all concerned authorities to remain vigilant and take timely measures to avoid any untoward situation. For Karachi, the Met forecast partly cloudy and humid weather with chances of isolated drizzle on Thursday. The city is expected to witness mostly cloudy and humid weather with similar chances of drizzle on Friday before the main monsoon spell develops later in the day.
