According to a Business Recorder front page news item, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister (DPM/FM) Senator Ishaq Dar, while speaking to a high-powered delegation of US businesspeople and lawmakers, has expressed confidence that Pakistan and the United States can double their bilateral trade to USD20 billion over the next five years by fully harnessing the complementarities of their economies.
In my view, Ishaq Dar, who is a former finance minister of the country, deserves commendation for articulating Pakistan’s case in an impressive manner. His optimism about a significant enhancement in the US-Pakistan trade is spot on. That the US occupies a central position in the Pakistan’s approach to its export strategy is a fact. Needless to say, the US is Pakistan’s largest single-country export destination. Hence the need to take all the required steps aimed at transforming the objective or desire of doubling the bilateral trade to USD20 billion over the next five years into a reality. In my view, it’s quite doable.
