KARACHI: The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has received the MSC Mirjam, one of the world’s largest container vessels, at (SAPT-2) berth the other day, marking another instance of the port handling ultra-large container ships.
According to the details, the vessel arrived at the port limits at 1100 hours and completed berthing at SAPT-2 by 1200 hours the same day. MSC Mirjam measures 400 meters in length overall (LOA) and 58.8 meters in beam, with a gross tonnage of 193,000 and a container-carrying capacity of 19,500 TEUs. The vessel arrived with a draught of 14.2 meters.
Port authorities expect approximately 1,500 container movements during the vessel’s call before it departs for its next port of call, Salalah, Oman.
The KPT officials said the safe and efficient handling of the vessel reflects the capability of the port’s marine pilots and operations personnel to manage ultra-large container ships on a regular basis. The port authority added that the call underscores the confidence international shipping lines continue to place in Karachi Port’s operations. The MSC Mirjam is operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), one of the world’s largest container shipping lines.
