ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday criticised the government’s continued increases in petroleum product prices, saying the policy was adding to inflationary pressures and worsening economic difficulties faced by citizens, businesses, farmers, and transporters.
In a statement, PTI spokesman Sheikh Waqas Akram said frequent changes in fuel prices had created uncertainty across the economy and increased the cost of living for ordinary citizens.
He said rising petroleum prices were affecting household expenses, transportation fares, agriculture, industrial production, and trade activities.
According to him, businesses and individuals were finding it increasingly difficult to make financial plans amid what he described as unpredictable fuel pricing.
“The government is shifting the burden of its economic failures onto the public through higher fuel prices, taxes, and petroleum levies,” he alleged, adding that the existing taxation system was further increasing pressure on consumers.
The PTI leader demanded the removal of what he called unnecessary taxes and urged the government to reduce the petroleum levy to provide relief to the public.
Referring to PTI’s previous tenure, Akram said the party had provided economic support and tax relief measures during the COVID-19 pandemic to assist businesses and citizens during a difficult period.
He called on the current government to adopt similar measures instead of increasing financial pressure on the population.
