ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday assured newly elected Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain that the federal government would work closely with his administration to promote the welfare and development of the region.
The prime minister congratulated Hussain on assuming office as the new GB chief minister. The meeting marked Hussain’s first call on the prime minister after taking charge, during which the issues pertaining to the region were discussed.
The prime minister said the federal government was committed to working alongside the newly formed GB government to improve the lives of the region’s people.
He said the government was pursuing development initiatives in key sectors, including renewable energy, tourism, infrastructure, health and education, aimed at supporting sustainable growth in GB.
Among the federal government’s priority projects for the region were the establishment of a 100-megawatt solar power project and the setting up of Danish schools, the prime minister said.
He added that the government was also planning to establish a Pakistan Easy Services Centre in Gilgit to provide greater convenience and improved access to public services for residents.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema and other senior officials.
The federal government has in recent years highlighted tourism, energy development and infrastructure expansion as key areas for investment in GB, a strategically important mountainous region that faces geographical and connectivity challenges.
