LAHORE: In response to recent monsoon spells, Punjab Housing Minister Bilal Yasin on Monday directed the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Lahore and Provincial Disaster Management Agencies to maintain a high alert and expedite drainage across low-lying areas.
Inspecting key points, including Lakshmi Chowk alongside WASA Lahore MD Ghafran Ahmed, the Minister instructed that all underground water storage tanks be cleaned and fully functional to prevent urban flooding.
He issued directives to ensure timely and effective drainage operations during the monsoon season. He emphasised that, alongside rainwater drainage, the difficulties faced by citizens in commuting during rainfall should also be taken into consideration.
He instructed WASA Lahore to deploy modern machinery and kept operational in low-lying areas and other key locations. He further stated that drainage arrangements at important sites across the city, including Lakshmi Chowk, would be continuously monitored.
He also made it clear that all WASA managing directors across the province have been instructed to maintain close coordination with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority and the district administrations.
In view of the potential for flooding and rising water levels in rivers and drains, he stressed that all necessary preparedness and contingency planning should be completed in advance.
