LAHORE: Speaker Punjab Assembly Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has said that any discussion regarding the role of the Pakistan Army in the country’s fight against terrorism must be conducted responsibly, objectively and in light of facts.

He stated that the sacrifices rendered by the nation’s martyrs are a collective national asset and must never be subjected to political point-scoring.

He further alleged that India’s intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), is sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan, while the entire nation stands firmly behind its armed forces.

The Speaker expressed these views while addressing a special seminar titled “Rising Terrorism in Pakistan: The Role and Importance of the Pakistan Army”, held at a private hotel in Lahore.

Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan said that the recent remarks made by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman regarding the political role of the military warrant serious discussion. He noted that Maulana Fazlur Rehman had, on numerous occasions in the past, described the country’s martyrs as a national asset and therefore his recent statement had come as a surprise. He urged the JUI-F chief to reconsider his position on the matter.

The Speaker observed that Pakistan has sacrificed more than 100,000 lives in the war against terrorism, making it imperative that all discourse relating to terrorism remains guided by national interest. He stressed that, under the prevailing circumstances, national unity and political stability are more important than ever before.

He further alleged that India is providing financial and logistical support to terrorist organisations in an attempt to undermine peace and stability in Pakistan. However, he said, the people of Pakistan, together with their armed forces, possess the resolve and capability to defeat every conspiracy against the country.

Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan remarked that the mention of the Pakistan Army evokes respect across the nation, as the armed forces symbolise Pakistan’s sovereignty, security and stability. He reaffirmed that the entire nation stands with the families of the martyrs and will always honour their unparalleled sacrifices.

Chairman of the Kashmir Committee Rana Qasim Noon, while addressing the seminar, said Pakistan has rendered unprecedented sacrifices during its four-decade-long campaign against terrorism. He maintained that India-sponsored terrorism poses a serious threat to regional peace and reiterated that the nation remains united alongside its armed forces.

The seminar was also addressed by Aziz Ahmad Awan, Chief Organiser of the Ex-Servicemen Society; senior journalist Rais Ansari; vice chancellors of various universities; academics; and other distinguished speakers. The participants reaffirmed their commitment to continuing collective efforts aimed at eliminating terrorism, honouring the sacrifices of the martyrs, and strengthening national unity.
