According to media reports, the US has unleashed rare daytime attacks on Iran, killing 7 soldiers. The US Central Command is said to have claimed that it concluded its latest round of attacks on Iran to “take out” coastal “military installations targeting commercial shipping” that lasted 90 minutes. However, the Islamic republic has said that more than 30 civilians have been killed and 260 injured in US attacks on southern Iran over the past few days.
The situation seems to be profoundly profound, as the current escalation could lead to a full-fledged war following US President Donald Trump’s threats that he would “bomb Iran’s bridges and power plants next week” if Tehran does not return to talks.
The Arab Gulf states that host US military bases could face a new round of attacks from Iran. The sheikhdoms need to exert pressure on the US to take steps aimed at de-escalating the situation at the earliest. Needless to say, the ongoing situation presents major global risks, including severe energy shocks, disrupted trade, and a wider Middle East conflict. Sanity must gain ground. What is needed at this point in time is reasonable thinking or calm behaviour.
