LAHORE: Imprisoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders have sent a formal letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), demanding an independent judicial review of the May 9 cases due to alleged systemic violations of fair trial standards.
In the letter dispatched via their counsel, Rana Mudassar Umar, senior leaders Dr Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mahmood ur Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry, and Umar Sarfaraz Cheema claimed that convictions were handed down solely on uncorroborated police testimonies while crucial digital and independent evidence was actively withheld. They noted the violation of constitutional fair trial standards and lack of independent evidence, adding that convictions were allegedly rushed using police statements while critical Safe City records, CCTV footage, geo-fencing data, and digital logs were never brought to court.
Hence, the PTI leaders demanded an immediate, independent judicial review into the investigation and prosecution methods of the May 9 trials; an expedited scheduling of appeals for all political prisoners currently held in Kot Lakhpat jail and a reassessment of sentences based strictly on constitutional benchmarks rather than official hearsay. They urged the CJP, as the ultimate guardian of the Constitution, to take decisive steps to restore public faith in the transparency and impartiality of the judicial system.
