KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Saturday announced the introduction of a barcode-based identification and tracking system for all registered water tankers in the city, describing the initiative as a major step towards eliminating the illegal water tanker mafia and improving transparency in water supply operations.
In a statement, the Mayor said every registered water tanker operating in Karachi has been equipped with a unique barcode that will enable citizens and authorities to instantly verify whether a tanker is legally registered.
He said scanning the barcode would provide complete information about the vehicle, including the driver’s identity and photograph, designated route, fitness status and the source of the water being supplied.
“The barcode system will help citizens distinguish between legal and illegal water tankers while enhancing transparency and accountability in the city’s water distribution network,” Wahab said.
The mayor urged residents to scan the barcode of any water tanker arriving at their homes to verify its legal status and report suspicious or unregistered vehicles to the relevant authorities.
He said the digital verification system has been introduced to identify unregistered tankers, regulate tanker operations more effectively and curb the activities of the illegal tanker mafia, which has long been a challenge for Karachi’s water supply system.
Wahab called on citizens to support the initiative by remaining vigilant and helping authorities identify unauthorized tankers, saying public cooperation would play a crucial role in ensuring transparent and efficient water delivery across the city.
He added that the barcode tracking system forms part of broader efforts to modernise Karachi’s water tanker service and strengthen regulatory oversight to ensure safe, accountable and reliable water supply for residents.
