KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Thursday rejected criticism by PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique regarding Karachi’s local government system, urging him to first ensure local government elections were held in Punjab.
In a statement, Memon, who holds the portfolios of information, transport and mass transit, said Saad Rafique should explain why local government elections were yet to take place in Punjab before questioning Sindh’s democratic processes.
He described it as contradictory for the PML-N to criticize Karachi’s local government system while delaying local body polls in Punjab.
“If local government elections are the foundation of democracy, then the people of Punjab should also be granted their constitutional right,” Memon said, adding that the PPP government in Sindh had already ensured democratic representation through local government elections.
He said local body elections in Karachi were conducted in accordance with the Constitution and the law, and that the people had elected their representatives through a democratic process.
Memon said the PPP remained committed to democratic institutions, an empowered local government system, and respect for the public mandate, adding that politics based on double standards would not be accepted by the people.
