LAHORE: Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique has announced that the Punjab government is making significant progress in its urban development initiatives, with numerous infrastructure projects currently underway across 51 cities as part of the Punjab Development Programme (PDP).

During a progress review meeting on the PDP on Tuesday, the Minister praised the ‘Maryum Nawaz’s Sohna Punjab’ initiative, describing it as a municipal game-changer that will provide modern municipal facilities to the cities of Punjab. He noted that key drainage and water storage projects are being expedited in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, with 105 underground water storage tanks being constructed in 49 cities.

To date, work is in progress on 114 drains under the PDP, of these construction of 40 water storage tanks and 23 drains has been completed, while 47 underground storage tanks and 27 drains are in the final stages of construction. The Minister expressed hope that the construction of these drains and tanks will be finished before the rainy season begins.

The meeting also addressed delays in project work on sites located along Muharram routes. The Minister directed that completed drains should be immediately connected to the underground tanks to facilitate rainwater drainage.

Additional Secretary of Local Government Mehreen Fahim Abbasi and representatives from NESPAK provided updates to the provincial minister on the PDP.
