World Refugee Day: Governor calls for global action on refugee crisis
KARACHI: Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi on Saturday called on the international community to take coordinated and effective measures to address the challenges faced by refugees worldwide, emphasizing that lasting solutions require global cooperation and the promotion of peace.
In his message on the World Refugee Day, the Governor paid tribute to the resilience, courage and determination of millions of displaced people who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, conflict, persecution and humanitarian crises.
“Today, we salute the strength and perseverance of refugees across the world who continues to rebuild their lives despite immense hardships and uncertainty,” he said.
The Governor noted that Pakistan has a long-standing tradition of hosting and supporting refugees, providing shelter and assistance to millions of displaced people over several decades.
He said the country’s humanitarian approach reflects its cultural values and commitment to compassion and human dignity.
“Pakistan has demonstrated exemplary hospitality toward refugees for decades. Our land has always welcomed those in need of protection, support and hope,” he added.
Hashmi said helping people who have been forced to abandon their homes and livelihoods due to war, violence and oppression is not only a humanitarian obligation but also a shared international responsibility.
He stressed that the refugee crisis remains one of the most pressing global challenges and requires collective efforts from governments, international organizations and civil society to ensure the protection of refugees’ rights and welfare.
The Governor urged the international community to work toward sustainable solutions, including the safe and dignified return, resettlement and rehabilitation of displaced populations, while addressing the root causes of forced migration.
He observed that armed conflicts, political instability, extremism and human rights violations continue to drive millions of people from their homes, underscoring the need for greater efforts to promote peace, justice and stability around the world.
“Without lasting global peace, it will not be possible to effectively overcome the refugee crisis,” he said, calling for greater international cooperation, dialogue and solidarity to address the issue.
The Governor also appealed to people around the world to support the rights, dignity and future of refugees and to demonstrate compassion and understanding toward those affected by displacement.
Concluding his message, Hashmi reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting humanitarian values, peace, tolerance and international solidarity, and expressed hope for a future in which every displaced person can live with security, dignity and opportunity.
