KARACHI: Pakistan Navy’s first Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Hangor, arrived in Karachi on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in the navy’s modernization efforts and strengthening the country’s underwater warfare capabilities.
According to a statement issued by the Directorate General Public Relations (Navy), the submarine was accorded a traditional naval welcome upon its arrival. The reception was attended by senior naval officers, Pakistan Navy personnel and families of the crew.
Cadets of the Pakistan Naval Academy presented a ceremonial salute to the submarine and its crew, while Pakistan Navy Z9EC helicopters conducted a fly-past to mark the occasion.
A reception ceremony was later held at the Pakistan Navy Dockyard, where Commander Pakistan Fleet Vice Admiral Abdul Munib attended as the chief guest.
The navy said PNS/M Hangor is equipped with advanced combat systems, modern sensors, Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology and enhanced stealth features, which are expected to significantly enhance the operational and combat capabilities of the Pakistan Navy.
The arrival of the submarine represents a key development in the navy’s fleet modernization programme and is aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s maritime defence and deterrence capabilities.
According to the statement, the induction of PNS/M Hangor also reflects the growing strategic defence cooperation between Pakistan and China, under which the Hangor-class submarine programme is being implemented.
Pakistan Navy described the arrival of the submarine as a transformative step towards enhancing its operational readiness and safeguarding the country’s maritime interests in the region.
