ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Thursday issued a weather alert for parts of Punjab, tourist hubs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), advising the authorities and the travellers to take precautionary measures as some hilly parts of the tourist hubs may face road closures owing to expected flooding and landslides.

Sharing the expected weather conditions in the next 24 hours, the NDMA spokesperson said that rains accompanied by thunder are expected in Islamabad and several districts of Punjab. Similar weather conditions are forecast in various areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while rain and thunderstorms are also likely in Gilgit-Baltistan and AJK.

The NDMA warned that hailstorms may occur at different locations across the country during this period. Poor structures and installations may face damage due to hailstorms and strong winds. The NDMA has also warned of possible glacial lake outburst floods and landslides in northern areas.

Rain, flooding, and landslides may lead to the closure of link roads in affected regions. A high risk of landslides has been reported in Hunza, Nagar, Gilgit, Chilas, and Astore. Shigar, Chitral, Kalam, Upper Kohistan, and Azad Kashmir also face a severe risk of landslides. Link roads between Shimshal Valley, Attabad Lake, and Karimabad have been declared sensitive.

Roads connecting Gulmit, Shishkat Bala, and Passu have also been identified as vulnerable. Landslides may block routes on Shigar Road, Skardu Road, Deosai Road, and the Karakoram Highway.

The Karakoram Highway, Naran Road, and the Jaglot-Skardu Road are among the highways that may face disruption. Moreover, travel activities may face disruption in parts of Kalam, Kundol, Arang Kel, and Dasu. Travel may also be affected in several areas of Patan and the Chitral Valley.

Relevant authorities in KP, AJK, G-B, and Punjab have been directed to remain on alert on sensitive highways and in mountainous regions.
