Federal Budget on 10th

Published Updated

ISLAMABAD: The federal government will present its budget for the financial year 2026-27 on June 10.

This was stated by senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Member of the National Assembly (MNA), Tahira Aurangzeb, to this correspondent.

No notification to this effect has yet been issued by the parliament secretariat.

On 29 May, the President had summoned the budget session of the National Assembly and Senate for June 5 a press release however the parliament secretariat did not issue any notification to that effect.

When asked for the reasons for the postponement of the budget session by five days Aurengzeb declined to elaborate.

The National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, postponed its crucial meeting, scheduled to be held on Wednesday (June 3), to facilitate further deliberations on the upcoming budget.

“It is to inform that the meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) scheduled on Wednesday, 3rd June, 2026, has been postponed. New date will be communicated in due time,” read the notice by the Cabinet Division.

The postponement of the NEC meeting is particularly significant as the constitutional body is required to approve key macroeconomic targets and endorse the size of the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) before the federal budget is formally unveiled.

Sources familiar with the matter told Business Recorder that there were disagreements between the Planning Minister and the Finance Minister on the size of the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). While chairing the Annual Plan Coordination Committee (APCC) Minister for Planning had lamented that “development allocations are being made within a shrinking budget despite growing infrastructure and social sector needs” and a mere Rs1.126 trillion has been budgeted for PSDP 2026–27 against total development requirements of Rs4.097 trillion, resulting in a funding gap of nearly Rs3 trillion.
