KARACHI: The Sindh Education Department has prepared a new policy aimed at addressing staffing imbalances in schools, including a proposed golden handshake scheme for surplus teachers and administrative reforms in recruitment procedures.
Under the proposed policy, teachers identified as surplus in schools with a higher number of staff compared to student enrolment may be offered voluntary early retirement through a golden handshake programme.
Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah said the exact number of teachers and students would become clear after the completion of a facial recognition-based verification process. He stated that once surplus staff identified, affected teachers would have the option of accepting a voluntary golden handshake package and retiring early.
The proposed measures are part of broader efforts to rationalise staffing levels across educational institutions and improve resource allocation within the department.
The education minister also announced plans to transfer recruitment powers for lower-grade staff to school headmasters. Under the proposal, headmasters would be authorized to hire support staff including watchmen, gardeners and office attendants.
According to Sardar Shah, the education department has continued to bear the burden of excess recruitment carried out in the past. He said reducing the number of surplus employees and teachers could help ease pressure on the department’s budget.
Officials believe the reforms will help ensure a better balance between staffing levels and student enrolment while improving administrative efficiency within government schools across Sindh.
