LAHORE: The Punjab government has set its sights on breaking last year’s cleanliness record during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, announcing a zero-tolerance policy for waste mismanagement and the cancellation of all relevant staff leaves.
While addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Punjab Housing and Urban Development Minister Bilal Yasin revealed a comprehensive provincewide operational plan, warning that strict legal action and fines will be imposed on those throwing animal waste into canals or open drains.
He stated that after the fulfilment of the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), a significant amount of animal waste accumulates in the streets and neighbourhoods. Maintaining cleanliness across Punjab during these days poses a major challenge. He emphasised that their goal is to improve cleanliness and performance in the cities and villages of Punjab compared to the previous year.
He further mentioned that, following the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, all cabinet members and officials will be present in the field.
“Animal waste will be collected from every doorstep during all three days of Eid. The uninterrupted supply of gas, electricity, and water will also be ensured,” he added.
He clarified that all leaves for WASA employees has been cancelled to maintain continuous operations throughout the three days of Eid, adding that WASA activities will start immediately after Eid prayers, with ongoing field monitoring.
He added that the establishment of WASA services in 41 districts from just five WASAs within one year has been achieved under the leadership of the Chief Minister of Punjab. Punjab, with a population of 140 million, imposes fines to ensure the implementation of the law.
In response to a question, he remarked that Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab extended exceptional hospitality. “Karachi and Punjab are one family. I will refrain from commenting on my own second city,” he stated.
He also made it clear that banned organisations are strictly prohibited from collecting sacrificial animal hides, and the Punjab Home Department has issued detailed guidelines regarding these proscribed organisations.
He encouraged citizens to use water responsibly and warned that strict action would be taken against those who dispose of animal waste into canals and open drains.
On this occasion, WASA Lahore Vice Chairman Chaudhry Shehbaz and Managing Director Ghafran Ahmed were also present.
