KARACHI: Chairman Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation and Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, on Monday inaugurated Pipri to Gulshan-e-Hadeed 5 MGD Water Supply Pumping Station in District Malir.
Addressing the gathering, Wahab said that the Pakistan Peoples’ Party fulfilled every promise made to the public and now with this project the residents of Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Steel Town, Landhi, and surrounding areas would no longer be dependent on any other institution for water supply.
He said a separate four-kilometer pipeline had been laid at a cost of approximately Rs500 million, benefiting more than 500,000 residents.
He congratulated Water Corporation officials for completing the project within just two months and said residents had faced severe hardships after the Steel Mills administration suspended water supply in the past, but the PPP-led local government had now resolved the issue. He added that more public welfare and development projects would be introduced across the city in line with the vision of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Wahab said that whenever Bilawal Bhutto Zardari makes a promise, he fulfills it. He remarked that the ceremony had turned into a large public gathering because of the people’s affection and support. He said some elements in the past had claimed that the Water Corporation would not be able to complete the project, but due to new leadership and improved teamwork, the project had become a reality.
He stated that the supply of 50 million gallons of water per day had now commenced and that residents would no longer have to rely on Steel Mills for water. Criticising the federal government, he said those demanding that Karachi be handed over to the federation were the same people who had shut off the city’s water supply.
The mayor further said that the construction of Shahrah-e-Bhutto had greatly facilitated residents of Malir and surrounding areas, reducing travel time to Gulshan-e-Hadeed to just 40 minutes, compared to more than an hour previously. He said 22,000 vehicles had used Shahrah-e-Bhutto the previous day.
He added that work on drains, roads, parks, and paver-block projects in Gulshan-e-Hadeed was also underway, while reconstruction and rehabilitation work on the N-5 National Highway from the airport to Ghaggar would also begin soon.
Wahab said leakages in the old water lines coming from Pipri had been eliminated and that the Dhabeji Rising and other related projects would be made operational before June 30 to ensure uninterrupted water supply to Karachi. He said the Water Corporation was also considering establishing a chlorination center and an office in the area so that jetting machines and staff could remain locally available for an immediate response to public complaints.
He appealed residents to cooperate with the water corporation in the billing system so that the collected revenue could be spent on improving local infrastructure and public facilities.
Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad, Water and Sewerage Corporation Chief Executive Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, Chief Operating Officer Asadullah Khan, General Secretary of PPP Karachi Division Rauf Nagoori, Parliamentary Leader Karamullah Waqasi, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, Juman Darwan, Sajid Jokhio, Shah Jahan Khan, Mir Abbas Talpur, Ghulam Raza Jatoi, members of the City Council, officers of the Water Corporation and KMC, along with a large number of residents, attended the ceremony.
