NDMS inks dredging pact with Port Qasim Authority to reduce foreign dependence, save forex

ISLAMABAD: National Dredging and Marine Services (NDMS) signed a dredging agreement with Port Qasim Authority aimed at reducing dependence on foreign companies, saving foreign exchange and enhancing the port’s operational capacity.
Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry attended the signing ceremony as the chief guest at the headquarters of National Logistics Corporation (NLC). Senior officials from Port Qasim Authority, Karachi Port Trust, Gwadar Port Authority, and members of the NDMS board were also present on the occasion.
Officials described the dredging project as critical for the expansion of Port Qasim and improvement of navigational channels, enabling the port to accommodate larger vessels and increase cargo handling efficiency.

Speaking at the ceremony, the maritime affairs minister said the establishment of a national dredging company was a matter of pride for Pakistan and would strengthen the country’s maritime infrastructure.
He said the project would contribute to the promotion of regional and international trade while reducing reliance on foreign dredging firms.
“Achieving self-sufficiency in the dredging sector is an important step towards promoting Pakistan’s blue economy,” the minister said.
According to sources, NDMS has formally commenced dredging operations at Port Qasim, marking what officials described as the beginning of a new phase in Pakistan’s indigenous port maintenance and maritime engineering capabilities.
Sources said the initiative is expected to significantly reduce reliance on international dredging contractors, resulting in considerable foreign exchange savings while strengthening local technical expertise in critical maritime operations.
They said NDMS would maintain optimal navigational depth and ensure uninterrupted port operations through the use of modern, efficient, and internationally compliant dredging solutions.
Sources further said the company plans to expand its dredging services to international ports in the future, while the ongoing operations at Port Qasim are also expected to support the port’s long-term expansion and trade handling capacity.
