ISLAMABAD: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) on Friday claimed to have busted a gang allegedly involved in stealing and selling sensitive personal data of important Pakistani citizens to foreign agencies.
Speaking at a press conference, Director General NCCIA Syed Khurram Ali said that the gang, operating from South Punjab, had been selling confidential information for “a few thousand rupees.”
He said that four members of the group have so far been taken into custody. “We have received information that officials from various institutions were providing details that facilitated data leaks,” he said, warning that the government had adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward the leaking and sale of personal information.
He said that Pakistani citizens’ personal data was being transferred to foreign agencies and confirmed that all relevant institutions were being informed to take strict action against officials found involved in data breaches.
Responding to questions, Ali said about the case involving actress Momina Iqbal, who levelled serious allegations of harassment and hurling death threats at her by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker from Chiniot, said the matter was being handled by the NCCIA Lahore office and was expected to be concluded within the next few days after both record their statements.
He said that cases involving women were among the agency’s top priorities and stressed that the NCCIA does not distinguish between rich and poor.
Calling journalists eyes and ears of society, he added that action would be taken against anyone speaking or acting against the state.
He further revealed that authorities had arrested several youths who allegedly claimed that Swat should become part of Afghanistan, arguing that the agency was obligated to act against individuals undermining confidence in the Pakistani state.
